Life Experience

Life experience has been one of the most influential sources of learning throughout my educational journey. Transformational experiences such as marriage and the births of my three children took me from Ontario back home to Nova Scotia. As a mother to three young children I experienced a dramatic shift, as my personal goals were no longer aligned with my professional goals and career trajectory.  I then took a step back from advancing my career in order to focus on priorities at home. A divorce and becoming a single professional once again required significant reflection and re-prioritization of home versus career. Embarking on the Master of Adult Education program reflects the evolution of both my life at home and my career – my children are approaching young adulthood providing me with the time and energy to complete the program, I am in a stable and supportive relationship with a partner who encourages me to achieve this goal I have set for myself, and as my children leave home and reach independence I intend to use this program as a stepping stone to make a career change into education.

My professional roles, leadership responsibilities, successes, and challenges have provided opportunities to apply theory, reflect on practice, and develop new perspectives. These experiences have deepened my understanding in ways that formal education alone could not, reinforcing my belief that meaningful adult learning is grounded in reflection on lived experience. As I continue to learn, I recognize that experience is not simply a source of knowledge but a catalyst for critical reflection, personal growth, and ongoing professional development.
